Established
in 1974, Accessible Housing Society (AHS) is a Calgary-based non-profit
organization and registered charity with a mandate to create opportunities
for safe, affordable, barrier-free housing for people experiencing
mobility problems.
The
Society was created to help in the construction of the Fourth Dimension
(4-D) group home. This home was created so that 12 physically challenged
young people could live on their own. Care was provided by helping
each person with transferring, dressing and bathing each morning
and night.
The
home was carefully planned and many people were consulted as to
the best layout and function for design and independence with personal
support services. Planners of the home involved potential users,
who worked with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, the Canadian
Paraplegic Association and architects. The individual was assessed
and proper designs were created to encourage an independent lifestyle.
AHS continues to operate the 4-D group home and many former residents
continue to live independently in the community.
The
information and experience gained from assisting many residents
to live in the community encouraged the Society to expand its services
to include:
- the
4-D group home
- the
Accessible Housing Registry
- support
services to two other sites in Calgary
- Design
Services by an Architect and Occupational Therapist
- Library
- Community
Development through AHS staff, Board participation, volunteers,
and partnerships with other agencies.
