Residential Assessment and Design (RAD) Program

“Your tireless efforts helped us secure funding with which the hope for accessibility was realized.” ~ RAD Client

The Residential Assessment and Design (RAD) program was created in 1997 and has quickly become our most used service. Individuals, home builders, developers, apartment owners, and architects can use this unique and comprehensive program.

RAD combines the expertise of Occupational Therapists (OT) and a Technical Advisor to assess existing residences or new house plans and offer design solutions that allow persons with mobility issues to stay in their homes and community. It is the only service of its kind in Calgary and area.

To request the services of the RAD program, please email ot@ahscalgary.ca or call 403-735-2428.

What we do:

  • Provide clients with home assessments to determine barrier-free design solutions that meet their needs.
  • Provide barrier-free design information including drawings and review of floor plans for new construction.
  • Provide information on funding sources for home modifications and assist with funding applications
  • Assist clients with finding a contractor and/or vendor to complete proposed modifications.
  • Review of construction (when requested by clients).

Clients come to us mainly for the following reasons:

  • They seek advice on how to obtain funding to help cover the cost of modifications.
  • They require advice on how to modify their homes to meet their mobility needs.
  • They require suggestions on incorporating accessible features in a new home.

You do not need a referral to use the RAD program. Your first contact will be with an OT who will determine with you the specific accessibility issues you are dealing with. We will usually make an appointment to visit you in your home so that present or potential problems can be identified and possible solutions recommended.

At the visit, we can provide you with information such as names of vendors or contractors, information about funding programs and eligibility requirements, appropriate accessibility products and standards.

When needed, RAD can provide drawings to help you to visualize and understand any proposed recommendations. They are also the foundation for quotes and a base from which to measure the contractor’s work.
